Medical Applications

Due to their unique customizable material properties, technical ceramics like alumina and zirconia ceramics are particularly suitable for the fabrication of medical device components. Their characteristics are as follows:

Fluid Management

In order to measure, monitor, and regulate fluids, medical devices typically need sophisticated and reliable fluid handling systems. Alumina and zirconia ceramics are utilized in valve and pump components for fluid handling. They have many desirable properties, including high hardness, wear resistance, high-temperature resistance, and corrosion resistance. Their self-lubrication alter the sliding friction and lubrication mechanism of conventional fluid equipment. Additionally, they are not easily cause jamming or breaking issues, and are durable. As a result, they find application in medical fluid management and pharmaceutical dosing pumps.

Electrosurgical Instruments

Ceramic tip for resectoscope is a crucial part, carrying image sensors, light sources, and medical device channels. Conventional stainless steel is a metallic and conductive material, which makes it challenging to satisfy the electromagnetic compatibility performance required by medical devices. The ceramic tips produced using yttria-stabilized zirconia is manufactured through injection molding, high-temperature sintering, carburizing, and blackening. It offers exceptional mechanical characteristics, biocompatibility, and insulation resistance.

Cutting Components

Traditional stainless steel cutting components can be replaced with zirconia ceramic cutting components. They can withstand ordinary disinfection and sterilization, are resistant to body fluids, do not deteriorate or denature, and can maintain chemical stability over time.
