Zirconia Ceramic

Zirconia(ZrO₂) Ceramic

Zirconia (ZrO₂) material is known as one of the hardest ceramics. It also has properties of high thermal expansion, low thermal conductivity, superior resistance to abrasion/wear and corrosion, as well as high temperature resistance. Due to its excellent fracture toughness, zirconium oxide ceramic performs not that brittle as aluminum oxide ceramic. Its outstanding performance in resisting crack propagation along with high thermal expansion make zirconia work excellent in joining ceramic and metals, prominently in applications like ceramic plunger and ceramic piston pump.

ZrO₂ Ceramics Material Advantages:

  • Using temperature up to 800 °C
  • Low thermal conductivity
  • Chemical inertness
  • Resistance to molten metals
  • Wear resistance
  • High fracture toughness
  • High hardness

Zirconia Ceramic Introduction

There’re several types of zirconia materials, typical types are as follows:

Yttria (Y2O3) Partially Stabilized Zirconia – YTZP High stress strength and toughness, good chemical inertness, superior mechanical properties, electrical insulating, using temperature below 800°C, fine surface finish, the most commonly used zirconia material, typical applications such as zircoina piston, sleeve, bushing, washer, bearings, cutting blades, etc.

Ceria Stabilized Zirconia (CSZ) This material is usually used for grinding ball. High density 6.20g/cm³, low wear, high grinding efficiency, generally used for paint and oil industry, cosmetic , magnetic material, mineral industry, etc.

Zirconia-Toughened Alumina (ZTA) Provide greater strength and higher toughness than high alumina material. It’s a nice material choice for wear applications like ceramic pump components.

ZrO2 Zirconia Ceramic Applications:
Valve ball and seat components
High density ball grinding media
Plungers for waterjet intensifier
Frac plug buttons
Pump seals and shaft bearings
Pump piston and plunger
Weld Guide Pins
Utility Knife Blades

>>> Unlike traditional ceramics, which are typically hard and brittle, zirconia (ZrO2) has far greater strength, wear resistance, and flexibility than the vast majority of other technical ceramics.

>>> Zirconia lacks chemical reactivity. It is slowly corroded by sulfuric acid and concentrated hydrofluoric acid.

>>> Zirconia ceramics offer the benefits of high hardness, excellent wear resistance, high toughness, low friction coefficient, and good corrosion resistance in general.

>>> Zirconia can be polished into a mirror surface more easily than alumina thanks to its special characteristics.
